「木匠兄妹」（The Carpenters）成立轉眼就快要四十個年頭，由哥哥Richard Carpenter負責寫詞譜曲、製作人、鋼琴伴奏以及和音，妹妹Karen Carpenter擔任鼓手以及歌手的工作。1969年正式出道，Richard出色的音樂天份，以及妹妹Karen輕柔深情的歌聲很快征服了美國大眾的心，同年單曲「Close To You」登上美國告示牌冠軍，還抱走３座葛萊美獎，木匠兄妹也因此一炮而紅。之後更是推出了許多膾炙人口，攻陷告示牌TOP 10的名曲像是歷久不衰的「Top of the world」、「Yesterday Once More」…，至今仍是日劇愛用的主題歌曲。

或者是受盛名所累，從1976年開始，長達四年的時間，Richard因為失眠而服用安眠藥，每晚服用一顆或二顆。但日子久了才發現他對藥物已經產生依賴性，所以用藥量越來越大。到了1978年，一晚要吃25顆安眠藥才能入睡了，手也顫抖到無法演奏，為了治療這個惱人的疾病，他毅然決定取消一星期後就要舉行的拉斯維加斯演奏會，前往堪薩斯州就醫。六週後，他已能安然入眠，也展開了生命中的新時期。但是Karen卻沒有這麼幸運，為了追求體態上的苗窕一直長期節食並且服用某種會引起嘔吐的藥物，導致最後患得神經性厭食症而死亡，，得年三十二歲。


The Carpenters的完美組合也因此再不複見，從此成為絕響。
